Of Confederates, Contracts and Congress…

The bodies of several of the Confederate dead began arriving in Richmond, VA 150 years ago today. Among them were Acting Brigadier General Francis Bartow and General Bernard Bee (the man who gave ‘Stonewall’ Jackson his nickname). The Richmond Dispatch reported that Bartow, though suffering from a shattered foot during the battle, was “waving his sword and cheering the gallant band on to the fight, when some miscreant’s ball pierced his brave heart.”

Also in Richmond on this day, Tredegar Iron Works received the contract to produce the iron plate for the Merrimack conversion project taking place in Gosport.

Also on this day, US Congress passed an Act “To provide for the temporary increase of the Navy.” This gave the President the authority “to take vessels into the Navy and appoint officers for them to any extent deemed necessary.” Of course – this was what the President had already been doing since hostilities broke out in April…
