He had been imprisoned – captured by the Confederates whilst delivering secret orders concerning the relief of Fort Pickens. Recently released, he was still in poor health when the order came to take command of a curious new experimental vessel taking shape in Greenpoint.

His name?  John Lorimer Worden. The 43 year old Lieutenant received his orders on January 11, 1862. Commodore Joseph Smith told him “This vessel is an experiment. I believe you are the right sort of officer to put in command of her.” Worden reported for duty on January 16.

His job? He had to find a volunteer crew.

His ship? Well, she didn’t even have a name yet…
