New Turret Anodes

We’ve placed a new anode for the impressed current system to improve the corrosion protection of the Monitor’s turret. This anode is suspended within the turret to protect the interior metal surfaces.

The turret is made of eight layers of 1-inch thick wrought iron plate. You can see each of the layers in the photo below.

The Turret Plates were 1 inch thick. How wide were they? How many were in each layer? Were the plates one vert. one hor. one vert. one hor. etc. It stands to reason that it would be stronger if the is the case, than all being vert.

    C.A.,
The turret consisted of 192 1-inch think wrought iron armor plates, 8 layers thick. The plates were approximately 3′ wide x 9′ tall, all positioned vertically. The plate dimensions vary somewhat as each additional layer has a slightly larger circumference than each preceding layer. The layers of plates were staggered so as to not have any continuous seems through the 8 layers. There is a full-size as-built mock-up of the turret in the Monitor Center at The Mariners’ Museum that shows a cutaway view of the turret and all of its construction details. Hope this information answers your questions.
