In celebration of the Message in a Bottle Exhibition at The Mariners’ Museum, join local artist Elaine Viel, and Christopher Newport University Art Professor Christi Harris for a fun and educational workshop on Saturday, February 6th at the Downing-Gross Cultural Arts Center.

This program is designed for youth in grades 2 through 8. Participants are asked to bring at least 10-20 found objects from your neighborhood, like bottle caps, soda can tabs, and whatever you find on the sidewalk outside. Viel and Harris will work closely with students to create unusual and fun works of art from these discarded and found objects.

The first session, from 9 A.M. to 12 P.M., is designed for children in 2nd to 5th grade, and youth in 6th to 8th grade will participate in the second session from 1 to 4 P.M. There is no charge but students must register in order to participate. To sign up, or for more information, please call Joanne Palmeira at 247-8950. This program was funded in part by a grant from the Newport News Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Come and exercise your creativity!
