Signal Sheet, Kittery Maine

In September 1814 combined forces under Lieutenant General Sir John Sherbrooke and Rear Admiral Edward Griffiths invaded Maine, establishing control between the Penobscot River and Passamaquoddy Bay. Coastal towns to the southwest were threatened by the power of British frigates to strike at will. The citizens of Kittery, Maine, the site of the Portsmouth Navy Yard since its establishment in 1800, developed flag and gun signals to help warn of an impending attack.
