Activity Ten Teachers: Latitude and Longitude
Instructions for Teachers
Materials:
- Overhead transparency of latitude and longitude
- Two-page latitude/longitude handout (Page 1, Page 2 - click to download a pdf file)
Learner Objectives:
- Identify latitude, longitude, prime meridian, international date line, and equator.
- Compute the latitude and longitude of objects.
Procedure:
- Using the Introduction to Latitude/Longitude page, create a transparency for the overhead.
- Identify and discuss the concepts of:

To test knowledge, the two-page Latitude/Longitude Handout may be used (see above). The answer key is below. World maps may be used instead to create a "Navigation Bee" in which students test their skills identifying locations based on coordinates provided by the instructor. Higher-level identification may be done by having students compute the coordinates of a city or a country.
