Activity Two Teachers: Create an Astrolabe
Instructions for Teachers
Materials:
- Astrolabe Pattern (click to download a pdf file)
- Lightweight cardboard (cereal box)
- Rubber cement, glue stick, or school glue
- Scissors or craft knife
- Hole punch or awl to make holes
- 2 small Brads
Learner Objectives:
- Create an astrolabe
- Describe the use of an astrolabe
Procedure:
Assign an individual or group to assemble an astrolabe. Keep in mind that this can be a difficult item to cut. Information on this instrument is limited. Students could be asked to draw a poster of how it is used, and oral presentations could be included in this activity. This instrument and the others in the Activities could be assigned to individuals or groups to create a "Navigation Day" where all the instruments are displayed.
