The Battle of Hampton Roads Juried Youth Art Exhibition

In January of 1863, just days after the USS Monitor sank off the coast of North Carolina, Grenville Weeks, former surgeon on the vessel, wrote that he hoped "the work of the Monitor [would] be remembered, and her story told to our children's children."

In that spirit, and in commemoration of the 148th anniversary of the great clash of the ironclads, The Mariners' Museum and NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary hosted a juried youth art competition. Young people ages 4 through 18 have submitted art inspired by the Battle of Hampton Roads, the USS Monitor or the CSS Virginia.

The artwork in this exhibition was judged in three categories. First, second, and third prizes were awarded in each category as well as honorable mentions:
