Our goal is to engage visitors with the world’s waterways, and help them find their connection to the sea. Inside, guests can explore small craft from around the world. On March 8-9, 1862, the Civil War Battle of Hampton Roads paved the way for a new era in naval warfare. At the heart of the USS Monitor Center is the exhibition – Ironclad Revolution – a melding of artifacts, original documents, paintings, personal accounts, interactives and environments that will pique all five senses. The strategies, people, technology, and science behind the historic circumstances surrounding this story will be displayed in a way the public has never before seen.

Defending the Seas: Explore the world’s military naval history, from the War of 1812 through World War II!
The International Small Craft Center: This fantastic center hosts more than 50 small craft from 150 countries!
The Miniature Ships of August F. and Winnifred Crabtree: This extraordinary exhibition showcasing the evolution of boatbuilding is one of the crown jewels of The Mariners’ Museum’s collection.
Spend one to two hours learning about the history of the Museum and allow our specialized Navigators share their favorite secrets. Or, read the panels, watch the films, and go on a voyage of discovery on your own! Scavenger Hunts are a fun ways for families to explore the Museum on their own while learning new facts about our maritime past. Student groups are eligible for a reduced student rate of $7 for grades K-12. One chaperone (teacher or other adult) for every ten students participating in a group tour is required. The required chaperones (teacher or other adult) receive complimentary admission. Additional chaperones or accompanying adults will be charged $10.00/person.

Students can have a more in-depth experience by scheduling an education program incorporating classroom or gallery instruction using original and reproduction artifacts, and allowing students to participate actively in the program. A Navigator-led tour designed to provide students with an overview of over 3,000 years of maritime history is included with most educational programs. Students have an opportunity to touch, listen, read, and discuss during their program and tour. Many of our classes can also be presented as outreach programs at your school. The Mariners’ Museum offers education programs to students across the nation and the world. Through Interactive Video Conferencing, we can present programs to your students no matter where you are located. No need to arrange for buses or collect permission slips. All programs are interactive, with students participating in activities with the Museum educator, all in real time. This permanent, high-definition theater allows visitors to transcend the museum experience into the world of undersea exploration. These entertaining and educational short films introduce the maritime world to visitors with breathtaking views and informative story lines. Your group can choose one of the films currently showing, or ask us about other film licenses we have for special showings. Groups can rent out the theater for a private showing, or join the general public with the scheduled showtimes

Schedule a customized behind-the-scenes group tour of the USS Monitor Conservation lab, the Museum’s leading scientific and cultural experience. The Batten Conservation Complex is the world’s largest marine metal conservatory, housing more than 200 tons of artifacts including the USS Monitor’s turret and cannons!
Pricing: $25/person plus museum admission
Experience the USS Monitor through a special presentation given by conservation experts in the USS Monitor Center. Hear the conservation experts share the personal stories and historical accounts… from the Monitor’s crew. Examine rarely-seen artifacts from the Monitor, hold the coal used to fuel the Monitor, and see exciting projects that the Monitor conservation staff is currently working on.
Pricing: $15/person plus Museum admission
