DESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY:
Repository: The Library at The Mariners' MuseumCatalog number: MS310Accession number: None
Title: John L. Hacker Collection, 1862-1961Physical Characteristics: 11 document cases and 273 rolled plans; 54 linear feetLanguage: EnglishCreator: John L. Hacker
SCOPE AND CONTENT:
This collection contains photographs, plans, specifications and correspondence relating to John L. Hacker (1877-1930), one of twentieth century America's foremost naval architects. The materials span the years 1921 until Hacker's death in 1961. The collection's strengths are mainly visual, represented by the large number of original photographs and boat plans. The correspondence included in this collections is mostly limited to business transactions and do not hint at the personal side Hacker. Despite this business-related correspondence, the collection does not contain a great deal about the financial or business actions of the Hacker Boat Company. The annual reports from the Hacker Boat Company and Hacker & Fermann Incorporated span roughly one decade and do not provide much insight into Hacker's business of boat design or construction.
COLLECTION SERIES DESCRIPTION:
The John L. Hacker Collection is arranged in nine series, which are based on material-type. These series are as follows:
1. Photographs
2. Plans
3. Specifications
4. Clipings
5. Patents
6. Sales Literature
7. Annual Reports
8. Correspondence
9. Miscellanea
Series 1: Photographs: Interior and exterior images from the 1900s through the 1960s of Hacker's designs being built and on the water. It is arranged first numerically then alphabetically. The numerical arrangement reflects the length of the craft. The alphabetical arrangement reflects the name of the craft, name of the place, or name of the individual. Unidentified photographs are placed last in the series.
Series 2: Plans: 341 plans for recreational and military designs ranging in lengths from 12' to 99'. It is broken into three sub-series, which are based on how the material is stored-folded, flat, and rolled.
Series 3: Specifications: Construction specifications for race boats and military rescue boats ranging in length from 14' to 85'. It is arranged numerically by craft length then alphabetically by craft type.
Series 4: Clippings: Newspaper and magazine articles and clippings from the 1920s through the 1960s includes pieces pertaining to famous Hacker designs and Gold Cup races. It is arranged chronologically by date of publication.
Series 5: Patents: Patents from 1862 through 1948 concerning improvements made to boat propellers and marine machinery. Individuals other than John L. Hacker obtained the majority of these patents. This series is arranged chronologically by date of issue.
Series 6: Sales Literature: Detached magazine advertisements and promotional literature ranging from the 1910s through the 1950s from boat companies and manufacturers who made accessories for boats. It is arranged alphabetically by company name thereunder chronologically by date of publication.
Series 7: Annual Reports: Annual reports for Hacker Boat Company from 1921 through 1933 and for Hacker & Fermann Incorporated from 1925 through 1931. It is arranged by company name thereunder chronologically.
Series 8: Correspondence: Letters, postcards, and drafts of contracts to and from John L. Hacker from 1933 through 1961. This material primarily concerns naval architecture, engine design and performance, and requests for boats and information. It is arranged chronologically.
Series 9: Miscellanea: Calculations, graphs, illustrations, templates, and offsets. Much of this material is undated and for unidentified craft.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
John L. Hacker was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1877. A largely self-taught naval architect, Hacker designed a number of record-breaking racing boats in the early twentieth century. By the 1930s, he was a well-known designer and builder of both standard-built pleasure craft and custom runabouts and cruisers. During World War II Hacker was the chief designer for the Eddy Shipbuilding Corporation, where he focused on military rescue boats. His post-war career was marked by more success in the design of racing craft, notably My Sweetie and Miss Pepsi. Hacker continued to draft and refine his designs until his death in 1961.
