The Mariners’ Museum: Civil War 150th Lecture Series

This occasional series highlights important dates surrounding the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia. Mariners’ Museum staff and volunteers will present these informative, illustrated lectures in the Museum’s Roper Theater. These lectures are free with Museum admission. John Ericsson began work on the engine for his battery before he even had a contract signed. Why? Because he knew he could sell it. It’s revolutionary design was something that private shipping concerns would want if the US Navy turned it down.

The USS Monitor was launched at Greenpoint, Brooklyn on January 30, 1862. Despite opinions to the contrary, the strange little ironclad actually floated! Join us as we mark the 150th anniversary of the Monitor’s birth – and the 37th anniversary of the establishment of NOAA’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

Civil War 150th Lecture - African-American Sailors on the USS Monitor

William Nichols. Siah Carter. William Scott. Robert Howard. Edward Cann. Daniel Moore. William Jeffrey. These seven African-American men served on board the Union ironclad Monitor during 1862. Some were freemen, some were escaped slaves. All shared a common cause. Find out their fates in this informative lecture.
