Elements of the Great Hall of Steam have been given new life… and a new space! Many of the ship models and engines that graced the Great Hall of Steam for 80 years have found a new home in the prior Abandon Ship gallery. New models will be added to the gallery including the sidewheel steamboat, Jamestown, which was used on the Chesapeake Bay around the time of the Jamestown Exposition, and the Mississippi River version of the sidewheel steamboat, Kate Adams. There will be other types of ship models, such as sailing ships, added to the gallery over time. Models of the walking beam engine, quadruple-expansion steam engine, and the cross compound steam turbine engine will be on display.
The steamship models and a new ship model maker’s stand will be reinterpreted in the space. A new children’s activity area has also been added.
