Step 1
Type an email message on the German Navy radiogram form at the lower left side of the screen.
Step 2
Though many of the steps in setting our virtual Enigma have been vastly simplified, the basic principles remain the same. After typing your email message, choose one of the seven daily settings below the message area. Each daily setting will randomly configure the outer and inner settings of the Virtual Enigma.
Step 3
Once the Virtual Enigma is configured to a daily setting of your choice, press the "Encrypt" button. The Virtual Enigma will automatically process your email and, like many actual naval Enigma messages, the text of your virtual Enigma message will appear in a four-letter group. During the war, U-boat signalsmen also used codebooks to shorten the text of messages in order to limit the amount of time required to broadcast a given message. Thus, your EnigMail message will also be condensed into a shortened message.
Step 4
Your EnigMail message is now ready for transmission to a friend. Press here to send your EnigMail message. Your friend will be prompted to the codebreaking section of this website to solve the enciphered text of your EnigMail.
