Chapter 3: Pirates

Issued 1940
Stylized Pirate Ship
The years from 1650 until 1730 encompass an important and often misunderstood period in colonial history. For during these years, the New World was plagued with pirates: sailors who used the seas to quickly strike at ships and coastal towns and just as quickly evade capture. Ultimately, pirates are simply ship-borne thieves. Desperate men (and a few women) driven to operate on or beyond the law. While most are considered villains, a few became known as heroes.
