The Interactive Story of The USS Monitor
In April, 1861, the Confederate forces opened fire on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina and set the stage for what would become the bloodiest battle the United States had yet seen. Because the Civil War coincided with the Industrial Revolution, new inventions and innovative thinking helped to sculpt a new weapon in the arsenal: the Ironclad. The Battle of Hampton Roads, between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia was the first standoff between these new and formidable forces. What was learned on that day changed naval warfare throughout the world.
