Calling all nature enthusiasts!
The Mariners’ Museum and Park invites you to join in the 2021 City Nature Challenge, an international bioblitz competition to record as many wildlife observations you can in the Hampton Roads area starting Friday, April 30 and through Monday, May 3, 2021.
This year, the nature challenge is casting its nets far and wide as the Mariners’ is collaborating with several prominent environmental institutions within the seven cities of Hampton Roads, which includes the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Virginia Living Museum, the Virginia Zoo, Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation, Virginia State Parks, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and many more.
Participation is easy!
Download the free iNaturalist app on your smartphone (see links below) prior to your next nature adventure. While on a scenic stroll or hike over the four-day event, take images of any wildlife you find (animals, plants, that cool tree fungus) and share it on the iNaturalist app. Please note that captive and cultivated wildlife (zoo animals, garden flowers, dogs, and cats) do not count. Click here for more details on making observations, and recording them for this fun challenge.
As you make new discoveries during your excursion, remember to practice a “Leave No Trace” approach such as no littering and being respectful of animals and plants in their natural habitat. Most importantly, have fun and help us record the incredible wildlife that make the Hampton Roads region its home!
