The June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines Mill was the third of the Seven Days Battles. It was General Robert E. Lee’s first major victory. Lee attacked an isolated portion of General George McClellan’s army near Boatswain’s Swamp and forced the Union troops, led by Major General Fitz-John Porter, back across the Chickahominy River. This action caused McClellan to retreat towards Harrison’s Landing on the James River, thereby saving Richmond.
