Prior to the Civil War, Stephen Mallory was a senator from Florida and chairman of the Senate’s Committee on Naval Affairs. In February 1861, Confederate president Jefferson Davis named Mallory Secretary of the Navy for the Confederacy. He created a navy out of virtually nothing, and used new, innovative weapons such as rifled cannons, torpedoes, rams, and ironclads. Mallory was one of the most effective Confederate cabinet members.RSVP Here
