About the presentation:
Born in Hawaii to Christian missionaries, Samuel Chapman Armstrong joined the US Army after graduating from Williams College in 1862. A strong abolitionist, he commanded the 8th US Colored Troops, who fought with distinction during the siege of Petersburg. After the war, Armstrong was promoted to brigadier general and joined the Freedmen’s Bureau in Hampton, Virginia. Recognizing the need for better educational opportunities for newly freed African Americans, he established Hampton Normal and Industrial Institute in 1868, today’s Hampton University. Booker T. Washington noted that General Armstrong was “the noblest, rarest human being that it has ever been my privilege to meet.”
