Location change this week: Monitor Classroom

Presenter: John V. Quarstein, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center

About the presentation:
During Abraham Lincoln’s election run, he told the citizenry of the United States that he did not wish to disrupt slavery where it existed; yet, he was against the expansion of this servitude system into the West. When the Civil War pulled the nation apart, Lincoln stated he would keep enslavement or end it to preserve the Union. Enslaved persons knew that the war was all about them. Long before the war, those who were enslaved endeavored to find freedom. They could be runaways, they could return to Africa via the American Colonization Society, they could revolt, or they could attempt a legal approach. Immediately after the outbreak of this conflict, they began their march toward emancipation by May 1861. By January 1863, those former bondsmen were freed and began to fight for the freedom of their brethren.
