When Union General W. T. Sherman began his March to the Sea, the Confederate commander of the Army of Tennessee, John Bell Hood, took his army northward toward Nashville. Hood failed to defeat Union General John Schofield’s command at Spring Hill and Franklin. The Confederates then besieged Nashville and Hood’s army was destroyed by Union General George Henry Thomas on December 16, 1865.
