The Members’ Preview and Continental Breakfast event will provide Mariners’ Museum Members with an exclusive opportunity to be the first to see Polynesian Voyagers in the John J. McMullen Maritime Arts Gallery.

Museum curatorial staff will be present in the gallery to share insights into the exhibition. Members will enjoy a special musical performance by Hawaiian Style Halau, followed by opening the exhibition with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Polynesian Voyagers Expert Panel

Saturday, October 1

Huntington Room · 1 – 3:00PM

Free Admission for Members/$5 plus Museum admission for other guests.

We encourage Members to stay for a special panel discussion sponsored in part by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. This is expert panel will examine how the Earth is changing; the ways indigenous cultures, including those of Polynesia and Virginia, have related to their environments; and how the world’s citizens can work together to build a better future.

Panelists include:

  • Nainoa Thompson, president of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and a master in the traditional Polynesian art of non-instrument navigating
  • Dr. Gabrielle Tayac, a historian from the National Museum of the American Indian
  • David Alberg, sanctuary superintendent at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Sanctuary Program
  • Representatives of Virginia’s native communities
