The Sport of the Game: Rum Running with Bill McCoy

Bill McCoy's Arethusa

Bill McCoy’s Arethusa

Exhibition in The Mariners’ Museum Library, located at Christopher Newport University

September 16 – December 31, 2015

Bill McCoy was one of the most sought after outlaws running booze up and down the Atlantic coast. Prohibition sought to curb America’s thirst for alcohol but instead created a lucrative smuggling and distribution business, with McCoy in the thick of that business. At the helm of the Arethusa, his beloved schooner, McCoy—himself a teetotaler—made his name transporting high quality liquor purchased in the Caribbean and sold legally in Rum Row, a stretch of ocean from Montauk to Atlantic City.
