First Ship For The Virginia State Navy

She was so decrepit that she wasn’t even worth burning. The USF United States escaped significant damage in the burning of Gosport and, despite her age and state of disrepair, became the first vessel commissioned in the Virginia State Navy on April 29, 1861. She would eventually be renamed the Confederate States and would serve as a receiving ship for the Confederate Navy at Gosport (think of it as a floating dormitory for sailors).

And who signed the order commissioning her into the Virginia State Navy? None other than Major General Robert E. Lee who was the Commander in Chief of the Military Forces of Virginia.
