This Website (“Site”) is owned and operated by The Mariners’ Museum (“We” / “Us” / “Our”), 100 Museum Drive, Newport News, VA 23606. The Site is for private, non-commercial, informational, and entertainment purposes only.

We provide the content on this Site, in support of Our mission to “connect people to the world’s waters, because through the waters—through our shared maritime heritage—we are connected to one another.”

These Terms & Conditions and Privacy Policies are enforced in accordance with the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the United States of America.

By using this Site, you the visitor (“You” / “Your”) must accept and agree to abide by the following terms. We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms & Conditions at any time without prior notice. If You do not agree to these Terms & Conditions and the Privacy Policy, please do not access, use, or participate on this Site. We may at any time revise these Terms & Conditions by updating this page. The Mariners’ Museum permits the nonexclusive use of digital and print reproductions of its collection and archival materials according to applicable rights and restrictions. Registered Users

Online Purchases and Donations

You may use Our Sites without registering or submitting any personally identifiable information. However, when You purchase a product, make a donation, or buy a membership online from Us, You may be asked to provide such information that may include a user name and password, Your name, membership number, billing and shipping addresses, telephone number, fax number if You have one, email address, and credit card information to process Your transaction. Your information will not be sold, exchanged, transferred, or given to any other company for any reason whatsoever, without Your express consent, other than for the express purpose of delivering the purchased product or service requested.

We store and use order information as follows:

  • Order information: We will retain Your order information, as listed above, for Our records, so We can track Your order and facilitate customer service.
  • Credit card information: We will use Your credit card information only as needed to process Your transaction or issue a refund if necessary. Following best PCI compliance practices, We never store Your credit card information on Our servers. Online credit card purchases are processed by either Blackbaud Merchant Services, operated by Blackbaud, or Authorize.Net. Both Blackbaud and Authorize.Net have validated compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), as required by American Express, Visa USA, MasterCard International, Discover, JCB and Diners Club. Additionally, Blackbaud has validated compliance with the Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA DSS).
  • Email addresses: The email addresses You provide for order processing, may be used to send You information and updates pertaining to Your order, in addition to receiving occasional Mariners’ Museum news, updates, related product or service information, etc. We include an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email so you can unsubscribe at any time.

Employment, Volunteer, and Internship Applications

Personal applicant information and uploaded documents (e.g., résumé, cover letter, transcripts, etc.) submitted via online application forms are securely transmitted via a 256-bit SSL encrypted connection between Your browser and either a server operated by ATS OnDemand for employment applications or by Our Gravity Forms server for volunteer and internship applications. ATS OnDemand is an online application tracking service We use for storing and managing employment applications. Our staff uses submitted employment, volunteer, and internship applications and uploaded documents for selecting qualified applicants for interview. We retain applications and uploaded documents for one year after the application date. No applications or uploaded documents are kept in a “résumé pool” for future consideration.

Newsletters and Website Emails

We may offer newsletters to share information with You about the Site, about The Mariners’ Museum, and about Our partners and affiliates. You may sign up to receive a newsletter either by registering for a particular newsletter or in conjunction with a special feature or membership for which You have registered on the Website. You do have to provide Us with personal information when You sign up for a newsletter. We include an unsubscribe link at the bottom of each newsletter email so you can unsubscribe at any time.

Surveys and Forms

We post online surveys and forms to solicit comments, opinions, and requests from our audiences. Information submitted via Our online surveys and forms is securely transmitted via a 128-bit SSL encrypted connection between Your browser and a Google server. Survey and form responses are automatically recorded into Google Apps Spreadsheets stored on secure Google servers. We may choose to export those spreadsheets for offline storage, printing, or reporting when necessary.

Do We use cookies?

Yes. Cookies are small files of information that are stored on Your computer’s hard drive by Your browser that enables the Site’s or service provider’s systems to recognize Your browser and capture and remember certain information. Most browsers automatically accept cookies, but You can change the preferences of Your browser so it does not accept them. Additionally, you might consider using the online NAI Consumer Opt Out tool to opt-out from receiving interest-based digital advertising.

The cookies We use do not contain any personally identifiable information. We use cookies to help Us remember and process the items in Your shopping cart and compile aggregate data about Site traffic and Site interaction so that We can offer better Site experiences and tools in the future. We may contract with third-party service providers to assist Us in better understanding Our Site visitors. These service providers are not permitted to use the information collected on Our behalf except to help Us operate and improve Our organization.

Do We disclose any information to outside parties?

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer to outside parties Your personally identifiable information. We may release Your information when We believe release is appropriate to comply with the law, enforce Our Site policies, or protect ours or others’ rights, property, or safety. California Online Privacy Protection Act (CalOPPA) Compliance

We value Your privacy and have taken the necessary precautions to be in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act. We therefore will not distribute Your personal information to outside parties without Your consent.

Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Compliance

We do not solicit or collect any personally identifiable information from anyone under 13 years of age. Thus, We are not required to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. Some of Our Sites and products are directed to children under 13, but no personally identifiable information is solicited or collected.
