Back in 1983, our Polaris Missile was on display in our North Courtyard, but it was at this time they decided to take it down and put it into storage. Unfortunately, that didn’t go quite as planned.
Hampton Roads Crane and Rigging (who we work with a lot!) was hired to bring their crane and help us out.
What no one realized is that the missile was full of water and much heavier than expected. This caused a huge problem as the smaller crane was not able to life the piece with the added weight.
Both the crane and missile fell over. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the missile sustained only some minor damage. The water drained once the missile was on its side and then they were able to life it up and haul it out. There’s never a dull moment around here!
