Cool Campers Kayak

Newport News was bustling with camps this summer, and here at The Mariners’ Museum and Park, we were thrilled to welcome so many campers through our doors and out onto the water! Among the many exciting programs we offer, our kayaking experience stands out as a favorite for those looking to enjoy some fun in the sun.

I recently had the opportunity to join The Mariners’ Lake Team as we hosted Camp Community Connections for a morning of kayaking. Camp Community Connections is a local Newport News summer camp for middle school students supported by the Newport News Youth Collective. The Mariners’ Museum and Park partners with Camp Community Connections to offer a kayaking experience where campers have a chance to explore the lake, connect with nature, and build confidence on the water.

The group that joined us included 13 middle school campers—from 6th to 8th grade—accompanied by four adult chaperones and supported by three dedicated members of The Mariners’ Lake team. Some of the campers had already paddled with us through our 6th-grade kayaking program, Mariners Lake Effect. For others, it was their first time in a kayak, but they soon got the hang of it with every stroke they took.

Before anyone hit the water, our team led a thorough safety briefing. We walked campers through the essentials, including the importance of lifejackets, how to paddle forward and backward, stop safely, and — perhaps most importantly — which Mariners’ Lake team member to call when a bug lands in the kayak!

Once everyone was geared up and ready to go, it was time for some practice paddling near the dock. Then, we were off! The group explored several coves around the lake, stopping along the way to take in the peaceful scenery and look for wildlife. The Mariners’ Lake Team also led a few simple mindfulness exercises, encouraging campers to engage their senses — sight, sound, touch, and smell — as they floated along the calm water.

While on the water, campers also learned about the importance of Mariners’ Lake and its role in the larger Chesapeake Bay watershed. It’s a great way to combine environmental education with real-time experience in nature!

After an hour of paddling and floating around the lake, we headed back into the boathouse. As I paddled alongside the group, I couldn’t help but notice how much fun everyone was having. I even overheard a few adults say how relaxing the experience was and how they’d love to come back on their own time. Honestly, I couldn’t agree more.

Whether you’re a camper or just someone looking for a peaceful way to connect with the outdoors, kayaking on Mariners’ Lake is an experience worth having. We’d love to see you out on the water next season — soaking up all of the amazing surroundings and connecting with your local waterway.
