From sampans and junks to kites and architecture, ancient China offers plenty to explore. Students will investigate geography, maritime traditions, cultural achievements, and innovations through a creative virtual experience that brings classroom learning to life by comparing and contrasting objects from The Mariners’ online Collection.
Exploring Ancient China
Students will explore China’s geography and architecture, with a focus on how they impacted the ancient Chinese culture.
Comparing Sampans, Junks, and Collection Objects
Students will view many objects from our online Collection and compare and contrast different artifacts, including maritime vessels such as sampans and junks.
Students will strengthen their observation skills and cultural understanding while making memorable connections to the study of ancient China. Most of our virtual education programs are scheduled through ZOOM Cloud-based video conferencing. ZOOM is free to use and requires minimal equipment. Learning Objectives
- Students will locate ancient China on a map of the world.
- Students will engage in career exploration by comparing and contrasting the work purposes of two different Chinese boats from the Mariners’ Museum Collection.
- Students will demonstrate cultural competence by identifying 2 ways in which Ancient Chinese culture has influenced the world today.

Pricing:
Payment can be made before the program, or we can invoice following your program.
- Programs at the Museum are $4.50 per student.
All adults accompanying a field trip are free. - Programs at your location are $4.50 per student.
- Virtual education programs are $125 per program.
Reservations are required for all programs and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs fill quickly in the fall and spring, so make your reservations a minimum of two weeks in advance.
