BEYOND THE FRAME: The Foundry

How do you convey the immensity of an aircraft carrier? How do you relate the weight of a giant propeller? How do you translate the heat coming off of a glowing ladle of molten steel large enough to pour parts that become the backbone of ships?

In this episode of Beyond the Frame, we visit the floor of the Newport News Shipbuilding foundry in both 1953 and present-day to explore the impact of scale in Thomas Skinner’s 1953 painting “The Foundry”. Through this work, we’re shown not only the power of industry but more importantly, the power of people. This series is made possible by the generous support of the Newport News Arts Commission and the York County Arts Commission.
