About the lecture:
After resigning his U.S. Navy commission, Flag Officer Franklin Buchanan joined the Confederate Navy, first overseeing personnel assignments. Anticipating command of CSS Virginia, he selected skilled junior officers who later played key roles in the destruction of USS Cumberland and USS Congress and in the clash with USS Monitor. These officers continued to serve with distinction throughout the war.
