Second Battle of Sabine Pass

John V. Quarstein
Director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center

The French intervention in Mexico created a strategic threat to the Union by enabling Confederate trade through Texas. In 1863, Union forces advanced up the Sabine River, only to be stopped by 49 Confederate defenders at Fort Griffin. Led by Lt. Richard Dowling, the outmatched garrison repelled the assault, capturing and destroying Union vessels in what Jefferson Davis called a remarkable military victory.
