USS Indianola: Deluded People Cave In

John V. Quarstein
Director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center

USS Indianola, a lightly armed casemate ironclad, patrolled the Mississippi below Vicksburg alongside Queen of the West. After Confederate rams captured Indianola, Admiral D.D. Porter launched an audacious deception: a fake ironclad known as Black Terror. The ruse panicked Confederate forces, prompting them to scuttle Indianola and leaving Vicksburg’s defenders with severely reduced naval support.
