Duration: 30 minutes
Gold, trade routes, river travel, and one of history’s most famous rulers set the stage for this exploration of the Mali Empire. Students will investigate geography, leadership, West African boatbuilding, Timbuktu, and historic maps while discovering the networks that helped this powerful civilization flourish.
Explore West African Boatbuilding
Students will examine West Africa’s boatbuilding traditions as they learn about the Mali Empire.
Trade and Timbuktu
Students will investigate the importance of trade and the ancient city of Timbuktu.
This program will help students strengthen geographic reasoning skills and cultural understanding while discovering the wider networks that helped ancient Mali thrive.

Learning Objectives
- Students will locate ancient Mali on a map of the world.
- Students will engage in career exploration by defining 2 careers which rely heavily on the Niger River.
- Students will demonstrate cultural competence by identifying 2 ways in which Ancient Malian culture has influenced the world today.

Pricing:
Payment can be made before the program, or we can invoice following your program.
- Programs at the Museum are $4.50 per student.
All adults accompanying a field trip are free. - Programs at your location are $4.50 per student.
- Virtual education programs are $125 per program.
Reservations are required for all programs and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs fill quickly in the fall and spring, so make your reservations a minimum of two weeks in advance.
