Duration: 45 minutes

Students will discover how spices found in their kitchen cabinets led to an era when cartographers mapped the world and explorers discovered landmasses new to Europeans. Museum educators will lead discussions on the economic and cultural life of the “Old World,” the profitable spice trade, European efforts to chart a sea route to Asia, and other factors that accelerated European interest in exploration. Teachers will be provided spice packets before the program, so students can examine the various spices while the Museum educator discusses their importance. Students will also investigate early navigational advancements, which allowed Europeans to cross the Atlantic. Visit our Ages of Exploration website to learn more about early exploration.
