Duration: 1 hour
What motivated Europeans to cross oceans, and how did those voyages reshape the worlds they encountered? Students will investigate the Age of European Exploration through primary sources, cultural perspectives, and inquiry-based activities focused on economic motivations, the Old and New Worlds, and the effects of colonization in the Americas.
Analyze Primary Sources
Students will analyze different primary sources as they rotate through different stations. Students generate words or phrases related to the topic and use the resources to make new connections.
Experience the Columbian Exchange
Students will engage in a game designed to better explain the causes and effects of the Columbian Exchange. This activity explains the ripple effect Europeans had when exploring the Americas.
Explore the Museum
Students will also explore the Museum and engage with artifacts that connect to the classroom portion.
By questioning sources, comparing perspectives, and making evidence-based connections, students will strengthen historical reasoning while deepening classroom study of exploration and colonization.
Teachers will have the choice of a docent-led tour or a self-guided, themed scavenger hunt through the galleries to complete the experience.

Students will:
- Students will analyze primary sources through inquiry-based learning.
- Students will identify economic factors that led to European exploration.
- Students will explore the career field of history by defining what a historian is and what they do.
- Students will demonstrate cultural competence by making observations of miniature ships from different time periods.

Pricing:
Payment can be made before the program, or we can invoice following your program.
- Programs at the Museum are $4.50 per student.
All adults accompanying a field trip are free. - Programs at your location are $4.50 per student.
- Virtual education programs are $125 per program.
Reservations are required for all programs and are booked on a first-come, first-served basis. Programs fill quickly in the fall and spring, so make your reservations a minimum of two weeks in advance.
