Several years ago, I first learned of USS Mayflower, a presidential yacht. I was studying about the 1905 Portsmouth Peace Conference at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine. I was curious but didn’t have time to delve into the ship’s history.

The Mariners’ Museum collection was built around significant and representative objects to tell the story of all maritime history. 

Through the Bay Watershed Education and Training (B-WET) program, Museum staff and community partners are working with Newport News High School biology and environmental science teachers to give them the tools and know-how to combat any feelings of hopelessness about the state of the environment in their classrooms.

The Virginia Peninsula was already engaged in wartime work when President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany on April 6, 1917. Local military bases, shipyards, air fields, ports, and people turned their faces toward the nation’s crusade to make the world safe for democracy.

When salt gets into things it’s not meant to get into, it almost always causes problems, but the nature of the problem varies by material: organics (like wood, leather and cloth), metals (like iron and copper), and other inorganic materials (like ceramics, glass and stone).
